The Zonal and Seasonal CO2 Marginal Emissions Factors for the Italian Power Market

This paper estimates the seasonal and zonal \({\mathrm{CO}}_{2}\) marginal emissions factors (MEFs) from electricity production in Italian system. The inclusion of configuration wholesale power market leads to a complete measurement emission which takes into account heterogeneous distribution RES plants, their penetration rate variability within generation mix. article relies on flexible econometric approach that includes fractional cointegration methodology incorporate typical features long-memory processes estimation MEFs. We find high annual MEFs estimated at level. Sardinia reports highest MEF (0.7189 \({\mathrm{tCO}}_{2}\)/MWh), followed by Center South (0.7022 North (0.4236 (0.2018 \({\mathrm{tCO}}_{2}\)/MWh) Sicily (0.146 \({\mathrm{tCO}}_{2}\)/MWh). analysis also shows large each zone across time. heterogeneity results us recommend policymakers consider related carbon when designing incentives for renewable energy sources expansion achieving reduction targets.
